We have many favorites, here at ThoughtLab, and are lucky enough to work in downtown Salt Lake City, where there are dozens of restaurants within a convenient walking distance. Often after a new employee starts at ThoughtLab, we give a rundown of where to go and what to order. Here is a first tip.
The Judge Cafe
The Judge building boasts a historic marker, and the signage has the chiseled look, with a "v" in place of the "u." If you're dining in, then you may find a seat wherever you please and a server will find you. Their regular menu offers a spread of lunch items, my favorite being the portabello sandwich. Their most popular dish is regularly found within the weekly specials, being the enchiladas.
What stands out to me, though, is the personal service. Sure, any restaurant is too busy to chat during the lunch hour. Yet The Judge is a place to make friends over a quick breakfast or afternoon cookie run. Their morning menu offers omelets, breakfast sandwiches, oatmeal and pancakes. If you call often enough (really often), it gets to the point where you can call and say, "Hi, I'd like eggs today, made the way I like them." And that's enough information for them to know (1) who you are and (2) how you want your eggs.
Their dessert selection changes daily. Staple items are the Royal cookie: a chocolate chip, coconut, macadamia nut delicacy; an oatmeal raisin cookie, and often a chocolate lava cake. What has brought them unsolicited (and positive) advertising on the X96 radio station are rare concoctions such as jalapeno gingersnaps.
